God is working: Baptisms
By Tom Marcus
Baptisms are both a sign and a symbol of the Christian
life. They point to a reality of identification with Christ and provide a
visual illustration of dying to our own efforts as we depend on Christ to live
His life through us. The Portantorchas baptisms of 2011 were very
meaningful to me personally. There were four of them and they
were the first four that I have ever performed. Just as baptisms
symbolize the Christian life; these four baptisms symbolize how Christ was at
work at Portantorchas in 2011.
The first symbolizes how Christ worked in the lives of our
staff. Alba, our cook, chose to be baptized in the Spring and expressed
how meaningful it has been for her be at Portantorchas where she continues to
grow and be encouraged in her faith.
The second symbolizes Christ’s continued work in transforming
lives. Elvia had been baptized into the Mormon Church as a child and
later spent many years in an orphanage in Honduras. Elvia accepted Christ
shortly before coming to Portantorchas and after a year of growth wanted to be
baptized in front of her “family” as a follower of Christ. What a
privilege to see Christ transform lives!
The third baptism symbolizes how the ministry affects our
families. I met Jose, Marco and Janet’s nephew when he was around 5 years
old. In the Fall, Jose came back to Costa Rica as a student and
experienced a renewal of faith and a solidification of his own walk with
Christ. Portantorchas has been abundantly blessed by Marco and Janet and
their families over the years and it was meaningful for our ministry to
participate in what Christ is doing in Jose’s life.
The forth baptism is a symbol of the miraculous way God provides
and brings students to Portantorchas. Adriana was also baptized in the
Fall. She arrived at Portantorchas because of chain of events that only
God could have orchestrated. Both God’s provision in the form of
scholarships and Adriana’s attendance last Fall are part of stories too long to
tell this time, but they will forever remind me of Christ’s continued work
among His people and how He is working in His world.
What a privilege to reflect on how God worked in 2011 and I look
forward to seeing what Christ has in store for us this year!
