On June 29th, 2008 a few of us on staff travelled to Flamingo Beach to join Levi Funk, and Amanda Stel as they joined each other in holy matrimony. The ceremony was led by Marco Sr. whom both considered the one pastor that they shared. Being that Amanda is from Canada and Levi from the US, and realizing that either way one part of the family was going to have to travel to the other side, or vice-versa, they decided to marry in Costa Rica... or at least that's the story.
One of the special quirks of working with young adults, is being able to see the beginning of romance blossoming. Sometimes we also get to see the ending of the blossoming romance. Although we aren't looking to promote the Bible School as a place to come to find your future spouse, we also think that there may be no better place to meet somebody who loves Christ and who wants to serve Him.
Levi and Amanda met on the microbus home from the airport upon their arrival two years ago. Their romance began in the second semester. This is the normal route. But what is normal. There is the staff/student relationship (I gave up on not allowing that years back.) In this category we have Carlos and Osa, Juan and Hilary, Josh and Rebecca, and Jorge and Bekah. Then there is the Jake and Elya story. They met on Jake's second term, and Elya's first and only. But there was no romance in the air. One year later, at a Portantorchas wedding in Washington, they took an interest to each other. Then there is the even stranger story of Rhett and Jenn. Both students. One from the US, the other from Canada. Neither were students together at Portantorchas, and as far as I can recall, they never met here. But one day at Columbia Bible College in British Columbia, love was sparked and they married. Though CBC can claim them, I still do as a Portantorchas couple.
I wish they all were fairy-tale stories. We have had some very sad and heartbreaking stories. Stories of pain, sickness, divorce, and even death. Either way, we are thankful to be allowed to be a part of our student's lives, and to rejoice with them in taking arguably the most important step of their life. Either way we pray for them. We hope to be available to them for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health.

Es de mi curiosidad, caso de interés, el conocimiento de casos de matrimonios de estudiantes egresados de Portantorchas (Costa Rica o cualquier otro en el mundo).
Como estudiante de dos semestres en Portantorchas Costa Rica, he conocido muchas personas, y de éstas personas conocidos suyos; en varios casos (no preciso si 7 o más) conocí de muy buenas experiencias de jovenes que tras completar su formación bíblica comenzaron una relación seria y decidieron casarse.
Lo más interesante de esto es que (curiosamente también) si bien no es un fin explícitamente y abiertamente promovido (pues aqui se trabaja en la vida espiritual de los estudiantes) se han creado lazos de amistad verdadera que en algunos casos han concluido en una hermosa decisión de matrimonio.
Si bien es cierto que por razones obvias y de reglamento no se fomenta la creación de lazos amorosos estudiantiles, también es cierto que quienes vienen acá, han decidido disponer su corazon y mente al Señor, y con este inicial paso, cuántas bendiciones añadirá Dios mismo a sus vidas?.
No podría tan siquiera numerarlas pues la forma de actuar de Dios es basta.
Al tratar de entender (porque no sé mucho ingles) el comentario que hace Don Marco Perez en cuanto a la boda en playa Flamingo, inevitablemente me dije: otro estudiante más que se casa¡¡¡. No pude evitar el pensar y hacer sumatoria de los otros casos similares, cuyos nombres específicos no podria decir sin previo consentimiento, por respeto, pero que quizás ya muchos de quienes conocen Portantorchas Costa Rica sabrán y son testigos de tal bendición.
En fin, solo comento, pues qué mejor lugar habría en el mundo para encontrar al hombre o mujer idoneo(a), que no sea uno en donde quienes conviven han entregado su corazon a Cristo y se han comprometido primero con el amor de Dios.
Que quede claro que Portantorchas no es un lugar para buscar novio, pero hay muchos que no se lo tomaron muy en serio y hoy día son hermosos matrimonios que con la fuerza y poder de nuestro Señor impactan a tantos jóvenes deseosos de vida, la vida que sólo en Jesus el Cristo encontramos.
